Our Story

Once upon a time, there were three beautiful princesses. Princess Ellen, Princess Lex and Princess Mel....

Okay, for real now. Lex and Ellen grew up one town away from each other, but had no idea until 2010 when they found out that they would be suite mates together at Hofstra University. So, they decided to meet for coffee.

Ellen says that she remembers Lex's Minnie Mouse watch and blue romper. Lex remembers a blur of blonde-ness ambushing her as soon as she stepped into Starbucks and giving her a huge hug.

They got to Hofstra, and Lex and Ellen jumped right in. (Lex, double majoring in Creative Writing and Public Relations and Ellen, in Film with a minor in Creative Writing.) Lex got into the Hofstra Show Choir as well as the all-female a'cappella group Makin' Treble, and Ellen jumped right into the Hofstra Filmmaker's Club and onto any film set she could finagle her way into.

Now, you see, younger Ellen was in Julie Taymor's movie Across the Universe, played Young Cosset in Les Miserable on Broadway and performed in the ensemble of La Boheme on Broadway. But, as far as she was concerned, all of that was behind her, never to resurface again.

Lex knew all this, and slowly started asking Ellen to come sing with her. Lex would play piano and sing, and for a while Ellen just watched.

Then one day Ellen started to sing too. That session ended with hugs and a lot of tears. Ellen claims that Lex brought her back out of her shell and helped her to overcome the anxiety and fear surrounding singing and performing.

These sessions in Monroe Hall at the piano went on for a while and then Lex showed Ellen one of her original songs... and that's when it changed. Suddenly Ellen was harmonizing to 'Bluebird' and they were discovering something amazing. So, Blue Lenex was born.

Ellen and Lex performed 'Bluebird' at Hofstra's Got Talent (Hofstra's annual talent competition) and surprised everyone. Just like that, Blue Lenex was on the Hofstra map!

That's where Mel comes in!

Mel and Lex were both in Makin' Treble back in the day, so after Mel expressed how much she liked and believed in Blue Lenex, there was that one fateful jam session...

Lex and Ellen didn't know what they were missing until Mel started beatboxin' or beat-boppin' away to their original songs. Shortly after, Ellen and Lex "proposed" to Mel, and so the third member of Blue Lenex joined to complete the trio.

And they all lived happily ever after...
